To Anyone Who Loves Art
You might already know that our imprint Consortium Books is a publisher intimately involved in the digital press revolution. That revolution is exciting to a lot of art lovers because it means access to more art with fewer gatekeepers between readers and the artists’ visions.
Thanks to the digital revolution you get the art faster, and typically you get it at cheaper prices. Our many indie-published titles are a treasure waiting for you to discover. But Consortium Books is just one facet of the gem that is the Consortium.
Making Art
The Consortium is a big set of lofty goals put into a rigorous business plan and run through a non-profit organization.
One of these goals is to create a new patronage model by which artists receive payment to create and improve their art. Not only that, but our artists have room for advancement and access to the benefits of the gainfully employed, such as health insurance and vacation time.
Another of our goals is turn around and inject that art back into the world as close to free as we can make it. And we’re not just talking about dollars and cents.
The Consortium believes that the copyright system, whatever its original intentions, has become exploitative. Copyright hitches art to the plow and enriches a few in money. Art, on the other hand, once enriched the entire culture in a value that utterly transcended cold, hard cash.
We support the arts, and thereby the culture, by supporting the artists.
Supporting the Arts
But we can’t do it without you, the art lover.
Look around our online headquarters and see what else we have to offer.
- You may have discovered us through our writers, but we also employ visual artists in media including oils, sculpture, photography, and more.
- Our musicians make everything from chamber music to thrash metal.
- We engage actors for both stage and screen.
- We even employ computer programmers who want to turn 1s and 0s into breathtaking things of beauty.
There are as many ways to support us as there are types of art. Take a look at our output and buy a few things. Just like that, you’ve become a patron of the arts.
Check out books by some of our authors. Buy a print, purchase a CD, or play our games. If none of it tickles your artistic fancy, please tell your friends about us and then think about making a cash donation.
Give us time and we’ll create something you love. We’ll enhance your culture in the process.
Embracing the Revolution
Some of the best artists in the world today spend all their time and energy editing poorly-translated instruction manuals or working retail jobs at the mall instead of writing outstanding new novels or capturing breathtaking photos. They handle insurance claims or babysit to pay the bills instead of composing soulful music or painting picturesque dreamscapes.
This is a cataclysmic waste of natural resources. Our society mines the coal of working artists today rather than being astounded by the diamonds of their artwork tomorrow.
It used to be difficult and expensive to get art from a creator to an audience. Thanks to digital art and the Internet, difficulty and expense are history. Whether it’s a JPEG of the Mona Lisa or an audiobook mp3 of the latest Harry Potter, artwork has never been easier and cheaper to package, produce, and distribute.
Think about it. Art and culture make us human and better than human. Access to our collective soul is easier now than at any other point in the grand sweep of humanity’s past.
In addition to access, art has become incredibly egalitarian. We no longer need mega-corporations or multimillionaire Medicis to fund our artists or our art. We just need the help of art lovers like yourself.
Support the arts by supporting the artists. That’s a world-changing concept right there, and it’s the everyday mission of the Consortium. Help us change the world.
